We intend to keep a log of our cetacean sightings [whales, dolphins and porpoises] and also info about bird migration patterns e.g. when Arctic terns arrive at Beginish from their southern world circuit; also when basking shark appear- usually around May and June; when Inish na Bró is covered in a dense mantle of fragrant pink sea pink and any other nature notes that we find interesting.

For 2010 the highlight of the year was probably seeing two orcas [killer whales], at close quarters, a few miles south of the Skelligs while M.V. “An Blascaod Mór” was involved in conducting a survey by IWDG [Irish Whale and Dolphin Group] for the NPWS [National Parks and Wildlife Service]. For national information on sightings and if you want to join a marine mammal conservation group check out www.iwdg.ie and for info on NPWS surveys and publications check out www.npws.ie

Also on our trips on at least 4 different occasions we spotted Minke whales breaching in Dingle Bay and our crew was lucky enough to catch one breaching beside the boat on the ferry trip from Dún Chaoin  to the Blaskets just north of Dunmore Head the most westerly part of [mainland] Ireland. Check out his video on www.youtube.com wildblasket.

The puffins at Inishvickillaun are always a pleasure to watch, as are the common and black guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes there.

We often spot Arctic terns dipping in the water beside the boat and picking up sand eels while moored off the White Strand [An Trá Bán] at Great Blasket Island.
