Sunday 21st August is Whale Watch Ireland Day, a land based survey of cetaceans organised by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) where members of the public can participate in whale and dolphin spotting from selected headlands around the country with the assistance of volunteers from the IWDG.

Building on the results from this survey and because there appears to be a weather window approaching for Monday and Tuesday, Blasket Islands Eco Marine Tours intend to run two dedicated whale watching tours departing from Ventry Harbour at 1700hrs and returning at approx 2030/2100hrs on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd for €35 per person and €30 per IWDG member provided we get 10-12 people on board. Please ring 086 3353805 for bookings.

As usual, there is no guarantee of seeing whales but we are always optimistic and it is not unusual for us to see harbour porpoises, common dolphins and minke whales on these trips. The great photo of a common dolphin was taken by Charles Collins, a passenger on one of our trips.

If there is no big whale activity (humpback or fin whales) in Dingle Bay or around the Blasket Islands we may go north to Sybil Head and Inis Tuascairt (The Sleeping Giant) where we had close encounters with humpback whales earlier in the season.
