Dingle Bay basking shark update

Today, April 27th, we set out on our morning eco tour with great hopes of getting some good sightings of basking sharks and we were not disappointed. Just after leaving Ventry harbour, we started seeing the first couple of sharks in amongst huge flocks of feeding seabirds. Conditions out at sea were perfect for spotting wildlife and as we moved further towards Slea Head the fun was really starting. Porpoises were wheeling in the distance - they are shy little creatures - and then we spotted a large animal right ahead of us - a minke whale. Surfacing a few times alongside and behind the boat we were treated to the sound of its deep blow. While we were still scanning the water for another sight of it, dozens of common dolphins came racing over toward us, jumping around the boat and bow riding with us. After they returned to their feeding and we steamed on toward the Blasket Sound we started spotting basking sharks virtually all around the boat, right up to the moorings off the Great Blasket Island. The string of grey seals along the island beach topped off  a perfect morning.
